The Court Street-Chemeketa Street Historic District is the major intact remnant of Salem's original central residential area. The district contains homes the date from each period of Salem's history and many of them were occupied by prominent people of local historical significance. The district comprises approximately 40 acres and nearly 100 contributing buildings and structures.
GPS Coordinates are from the front of the Waller-Chamberlin House (default picture above), thought to be the oldest house in the district. The house is believed to be built by Alvin Waller, a pioneer Methodist missionary, for whom Waller Hall, a National Register property on the campus of Willamette University is named.

Note: The City of Salem published a list of historic district contributing properties which included the Cassie J. Brophy House (240 13th St NE) and Henry & Marie Caldwell House (160 14th St NE). However, the historic district nomination form maintained by the National Park Service does not include those properties, showing the lots as falling just outside the district boundaries. Also, the "Little Gem Grocery," formerly located at 1699 Chemeketa Street NE, is listed in the official nomination form but was relocated in 1998 and is now part of the A.C. Gilbert Village.
