Franklin Yocum, who was born in Kentucky and crossed the plains in 1851. He married Nancy Darnell and the family had 10 children. Yocum was a farmer in Polk County in 1864 when he purchased this lot. During the early 1870s, Yocum moved to Salem and ran a slab lumber business. As the City Directory for 1874 lists him as living in this area, it is believed that he was in this house and that it was built sometime between 1864 and 1874. This house, one of the two or three oldest in the district, was sold by Yocum in 1908.
