This Dutch Colonial house was built in 1926 for B.L. Steeves and his wife Sarah Steeves. The house was rumored to have cost $30,000 (nearly $400,000 in today's dollars). Mr. Steeves, a Canadian, attended
Willamette University, earning a medical degree and practicing medicine in Silverton for several years. The Steeves moved to Idaho, where B.L. practiced medicine for 12 years. He was elected Lieutenant Governor of that state in 1905. Steeves returned to Salem in 1909, establishing a practice specializing in eye, ear, nose and throat. Mrs. Steeves, also a Willamette University graduate, authored a book titled
"Book of Remembrance, Marion County Pioneers, 1840-1860". After her husband's death in 1934, Mrs. Steeves sold the house; a subsequent sale in 1943 brought house back into the Steeves family as Mary Steeves, widow of B.L. and Sarah's son Laban Steeves, bought the house and continued to live there with her husband Conrad Paulson as of 1986.
