Golden Gate Park was designed by William Hammond Hall in 1870. John MacLaren followed him in 1887 and spent the next 50 years improving Golden Gate Park.
Golden Gate Park (GGP) rivals Central Park in New York City as one of the most beautiful parks in America.
The park layout is primarily a rectangle with the long direction going east and west. The park boundaries stretches from Ocean Beach and the Great Highway on the West to Stanyan Street on the East and from Fulton Street on the North to Lincoln Way on the South. There is also a small, one-block wide panhandle at the east edge, bounded by Fell Street on the North, Oak Street on the South and extending the park east to Baker Street.
The park is about 3 miles long and 1/2 mile wide area, with an area of about 1.6 square miles or over 1000 acres. There are two main roads which travel the length of the park, Martin Luther King Drive and John F. Kennedy Drive.
There are nine lakes in the park. From west to east they are North Lake, Spreckels Lake, Middle Lake, Metson Lake, Mallard Lake, Elk Glen Lake, Lloyd Lake, Stow Lake and Alvord Lake.
