Golden Gate park is home to one of only two surviving four-row carousels made by the Herschell-Spillman company of Buffalo, New York. (The other is in Tilden Park.)
This building was erected in the 1890's

but there has been a carousel on this spot since 1888.
An earlier carousel was powered by steam and the power building for it is still nearby
The carousel broke down in 1977 and was then restored. As part of the restoration, artist Ruby Newman decided to update the ride with a color scheme of her own creation
So a modern color scheme was applied to the orginal Herschell-Spillman carvings.

the result is stunning.
