This tour is based on a pamphlet from the Portland Water Bureau. It's a great way to walk around Portland and photograph art. Total Tour Length: 3.6 miles. Total Tour Time: 2 hours (depending on how many pictures you take ;-)

This tour is based on a pamphlet from the Portland Water Bureau: Portland's Municipal Fountains: A Self-Guided Tour. It has been modified slightly to include a 2 new fountains which were constructed since publication.

1. Pioneer Courthouse Square Fountain

1. Pioneer Courthouse Square Fountain
Begin your tour at the Pioneer Courthouse Square. If driving or parking downtown make you uncomfortable, take the MAX train to the Square. There are lots of other cool things to waymark at the Square, so be sure to click "nearest waymarks" below and study the list before you depart.

These fountains begin just across the street from the Square and they continue all the way down the block along the north and south side of the Pioneer Courthouse.

This fountain has been waymarked as a Sit-by-me Statue.

3. Teacher's Fountain

From the Animals in Pools Fountains, you need to back track toward Pioneer Courthouse Square and proceed west along Yamhill for 3 blocks, turn left on Park. Teacher's Fountain is in Director's Park on the corner of Yamhill and Park.

4. Shemanski Fountain

From Teacher's Fountain, proceed south along Park for 3 blocks until Salmon. Shemanski's Fountain is very near the corner of Park and Salmon. This is the very beginning of the park blocks. There are lots of interesting things to waymark all the way up to Portland State University. If you find the character of this block unsavory, rest assured that the character of the park blocks improves very quickly as you approach the university.

5. Chimney Fountain

From Shemanski Fountain, proceed south 11 blocks through the park. Here's a list of some of the great waymarks you'll see along the way: Abraham Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, the plank road, the Portland Art Museum, St. James Lutheran Church, the peace chant, the Shadow of the Elm and the Benson House. When you reach College Ave, turn left and proceed east for 4 blocks to SW 4th Ave. Turn right on 4th and proceed south for 1 block to Lincoln Ave. Turn left on Lincoln and proceed approximately 1 block to Chimney Fountain. Keep your eyes open. You can see this fountain from the sidewalk, but it looks a lot different without water, and you might miss it. If you find 1st, then you need to back track and try again.

From Chimney Fountain, proceed north through the park for approximately 1 block.

From Lovejoy Fountain proceed north through the park for approximately 2 blocks.

From The Dreamer, proceed north approximately 1 block until you exit the park at Market Street. Turn left on Market and proceed west for 1 block to 3rd Street. Keller Fountain is at the corner of Market and 3rd.

From Keller Fountain proceed north along 3rd Street for 4 blocks to Main Street. Elk Fountain is right in the middle of Main Street between 3rd and 4th.

10. Salmon Springs

From Elk Fountain proceed north along 3rd Street for 1 block to Salmon Street. Turn right and proceed east along Salmon for 3 blocks until you reach Tom McCall Waterfront Park and the Salmon Street Springs Fountain. Along the way, you might find a nice place to stop for lunch.

11. Naito Fountain

From Salmon Springs Fountain proceed north along the Willamette River, enjoying Waterfront Park for approximately eight blocks under the Morrison Bridge and past the sternwheeler tug boat and the battleship mast until you approach the Naito Fountain.

From Naito Fountain, proceed west across Naito Parkway, walk through the plaza and around the arches to find Skidmore Fountain.

From Skidmore Fountain proceed north past the colonnade toward the Burnside Bridge and climb the stairs to reach Burnside. At the top of the stairs, turn left and proceed 4 blocks to SW 5th Ave. Along the way, you may catch a glimpse of the gates to Chinatown. Turn left on 5th and proceed half a block toward Ankeny Street.

14. Kelly's Fountain

From the car wash fountain, proceed west along Burnside for 1 block. You will pass right by the Bancorp Tower. Turn left at SW 6th Ave and proceed south for 1 block. You may notice a commemorative plaque dedicated to the first Salvation Army open-air worship service at the corner of SW Fifth Street and W. Burnside. Kelly's Fountain is on the corner of 6th and Pine.

To return to your starting point, proceed south along SW 6th Ave for 5 blocks. Along the way, you might stop inside Moonstruck Chocolates.
