Pioneer Courthouse (1869-7; 1893; west wing addition 1903); Also known as United States Courthouse, Custom House and Post Office, 520 SW Morrison Street, is now located at SW Sixth between SW Morrison and SW Yamhill. Architect: Alfred Bult Mullet (Mullett)/Addition: James Knox Taylor. Italianate Renaissance architectural style.Note the octagonal cupola on top of the roof (see photo). The building has Select Base 4' x 4' isolators so it can move laterally up to 18" in any direction during a seismic event. On the corner of the building are iron structures covering stairways that go down to public restrooms no longer in use. Pioneer Courthouse created a controversy among Portlanders upon its construction. They felt that it had been built too far away from the heart of downtown. Some locals recommended setting up a Pony Express station to link the post office in Pioneer Courthouse with the city's center near the waterfront. Instructions for logging waymark: A photograph is required that shows you (or your GPS receiver, if you are waymarking solo) and the place.
