Willamette University is made up of an undergraduate
College of Liberal Arts and post-graduate schools of
management,
law, and
education. The school has an endowment of $283 million and serves approximately 1,800 undergraduates and 780 post graduate students. The university employs 315 academic staff.
University sports teams are known as the Bearcats and compete in the NCAA Division III Northwest Conference. The school fields teams in baseball, basketball, cross-country, golf, football, rowing, soccer, softball, tennis, track & field, and volleyball.
The university began as the Indian Manual Labor Training School, founded by Methodist missionary Jason Lee in 1841. The Methodist Mission Board sold the building that housed the Manual Labor School to the trustees of the Oregon Institute as a school for the children of missionaries and settlers. The institute eventually became Willamette University and Feb. 1, 1842 is considered as the founding date for Willamette University.
