Caudill Rowlett Scott designed this 725-foot, post-modern office tower for Gulf Oil in 1982, as part of Houston Center. After a stint as headquarters for Chevron, the building’s major tenant now is the law firm of Fulbright & Jaworski.

Perhaps trying to fuse two different architectural styles, the north facade of this tower is straight-up international-style, nothing more than a sleek glass box. The south facade is post-modern, with a stepped tower paying tribute to Gulf’s Art Deco headquarters in Pittsburgh. This dichotomy is played out again at street level, but on opposite sides. The north entrance cuts-off the outside world with a windowless, stepped concrete wall; the south entrance opens up to a street-level plaza, welcoming you in. The net effect is that the building is easily mistaken for other downtown skyscrapers - different ones depending on which side of the building you can see.
Two years after constructing their Houston offices, Gulf Oil merged with Chevron and the building became Chevron’s new headquarters. Seventeen years later, in 2001, Chevron merged with Texaco, moving the mega-corporation’s offices to Texaco Heritage Plaza on the opposite side of downtown. The building’s second-largest tenant, Fulbright & Jawroski, eventually moved into most of Chevron’s vacated space.
