This large one-and-one-half-story Vernacular structure was built in 1908 by Samuel A. Hughes and his wife, Orpha Eoff Hughes. Mr. Hughes was in the construction business and was responsible for many well known Salem-area buildings, including the
old Salem Armory,
Lausanne Hall (a residence hall at
Willamette University) and
Salem High School. Hughes also served three terms in the Oregon State legislature as a member of the house. He died in 1946 and Orhpa continued to live in the house until 1949.
