Built in 1892, the Witzel-Watters house originally featured a Queen Anne design similar to the nearby
Rand House. However, in 1920 it was completely remodeled as a Craftsman design. But the house is still considered of secondary contributing significance to the historic district.
The lot was sold to the Witzel family in 1891 and soon after they built this house. Benjamin A. Witzel and his wife Lavila Hendricks Witzel moved to Oregon from Missouri by wagon train in 1854, settling in the Aumsville-Turner area. Benjamin Witzel sold the house in 1895 to Sylvia Greene, who ultimately sold it to L.E. and Rev. Dennis A. Watters. Reverend Watters became the first presiding elder of the Salem Methodist Epicopal district and was the author of several books. The house currently provides apartment space for at least three separate addresses.
