With an NHL sized ice surface, the arena is home to the Creston Valley Thunder Cats of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League, a Junior "B" League. It is named Johnny Bucyk Arena after Johnny Bucyk, Creston resident who played briefly for the Detroit Red Wings, then the Boston Bruins in the 50s, 60s and 70s, until retiring in 1978. His best year was 1970-71, in which he scored 51 goals at the age of 35. Bucyk remains Boston's all-time leader in seasons (21), and goals (545). He is second only to Ray Bourque in games played. Bucyk has donated many hours and much memorabilia to the centre.
The arena offers public skating with skate rentals, figure skating and lessons, and hockey schools. With a swimming pool in the complex, one could go for a skate, then a dip.
As well as the arena, inside the complex one will find a Curling Arena & Lounge, Aquatic Centre, Gymnasium and Fitness Centre. Outside are a children`s playground, ball diamonds (with batting cage), soccer fields, skate park and a seniors centre.
Coming up on four years old, this is a complex which makes the citizens of Creston justifiably proud.
