Bear Circle represents a mother bear and her cubs, she foraging for food while the cubs cavort around her. This is an unmistakable work of Stewart Steinhauer, a native sculptor living and working at the Saddle Lake Cree Nation in Saddle Lake, Alberta. His style is very much evident in this piece. A lover of bears and the meaning they hold for him, he has done quite a number of them, mostly in granite.
A self taught world renowned sculptor, he spontaneously began sculpting in stone in 1973 the day after the birth of his first child. After sculpting for 17 years he turned professional and staged his first professional exhibition in 1991. His works are to be found in public displays from British Columbia to Ontario and in private collections around the world.
