A sculpture of a Sibyl, reclining on a Sphinx is part of the Bismarck National Memorial in Berlin.

Sibyls were ancient Greek oracles, prophesying at holy sites. Most prominent one was the Oracle of Delphi.

The sculptures surrounding the Bismarck-Statue are supposed to highlight Bismarck's virtues. In this statue, Both the Spinx and the Sibyl are symbolizing "Bismarck's wisdom."
The Sibyl is reading the book of history, symbolizing the dawn of a new historical era for Germany.

The Bismarck National Memorial was created in 1901 to honor Otto Fürst von Bismarck as the Founding Father of the German Empire. For an extensive description of the entire monument see our waymark.
