With dancing fountains arching over light rail trains as they travel atop a pool of water, the square is pretty cool with its nightly video shows – but it's definitely not the Fremont Street Experience.

By 2000, Houston was the largest American city without a light rail system. The entire concept of mass transit in a city built on oil was extremely contentious. But the light rail system was finally built. To showcase Houston’s little light rail line, the city closed off traffic in a block of Main Street and, in conjunction with the Central Houston Partnership and METRO, built a pedestrian plaza, filled with sculpture and fountains, connecting two light rail stations.
