This two-story Craftsman style house was built in 1910 for James and Mary Giddings. Mr. Giddings was a retired merchant who moved with his wife from Iowa to Salem in 1903. They lived at this home from 1910 to 1921. The house changed hands several times in the 1920s; at one point it was used as a "maternity home." In 1930, it was purchased by Lena Cherrington, the widow of noted Salem photographer W.M. Cherrington, whose business was reported in 1893 by the
Oregon Statesman as the "best equipped photography gallery on this coast north of San Francisco." As of the NRHP District Nomination date, the Cherrington's daughter Pat continued to live in this house.
