This is one of two gate houses, built in 1828, that guarded the the U.S. Capitol grounds until 1874. in 1889 these gate houses were reconstructed at the current location. The poor-quality Aquia Creek sandstone that was used in the Capitol gate houses shows how rapidly the stone decays when exposed to weather, floods and acid rain. At the lower corner of the building front are two lines cut in the sandstone showing where flood waters reached in 1877 and 1881.

A plaque on the front of the building reads:

Bulfinch Gate House
Erected about 1828
under direction of
Charles Bulfinch,
Architect of the Capitol, this gate
house stood until 1874 with another
(now at 17th and Constitution Avenue)
at the west entrance
to the Capitol Grounds.
