Once upon a time this was a "stand alone" house, built in the Colonial tradition amidst other homes of Haddonfield settlers. Haddonfield business district grew and this house, now turned business, is crammed between buildings.

The little, oblong, rectangular, silver historic marker placed by the Historic Society reads "Samuel Kennard 1782" making this one old house. It is found on the right had side of the business, next to the bulk windows. I particularly liked the stucco throughout and the "balcony" with its wrought iron fencing, very reminiscent of a New Orleans style, "throw down your beads" terrace. Today, this once functional and appealing home is now the site of "Jamaican Me Crazy", some kind of speciality gift store. I would imagine the upstairs apartments are reserved for tenants.

For a little more physical description of this site, I have added information from the original nomination form sent to the Department of the Interior to place this town on the NRHP. This narrative was created March 16, 1979, mailed in to Washington, D.C. and evaluated April 18, 1980 and finally approved on July 21, 1982. Thanks to this designation and the efforts of the community to stop developers in the early 70s, Haddonfield is permanently protected and is one of the best example of an intact Colonial America. This house adds to that with its Colonial facade if you have an eye for such a thing and can pick it out from the later half century "wanna be" structures. Although the description is 30 years old, it is still pretty much accurate.

Historic building, built by Samuel Conard ["Conard" should have been spelled "Kennard"] in 1782. Converted to dress shop with a second floor having three pairs of casement doors opening onto an ornamental iron railing, above a slight pent roof. Two circular bays on first floor with divided lights. Roof recesses into pitched roof with shingles. Wood cornice."

If you have half a mind to explore this waymark and the hundreds of others in this historic area, go to this WEBSITE, you will see where all the free parking in town is located as well as all the other historical areas. The are several close-by public parking areas. The public parking area takes nickels, dimes and quarters. There is also parking located right out in front of this historic site (I parked directly in front of this "house"). Foot and regular traffic can be a very overwhelming, especially at this location, in the warm months, but easy pickings in the colder months. People park on the street for hours at a time so go early.
