When it comes to building monuments in Brno, two places clearly dominate. One of them is the Gothic cathedral (

The name of the architect Dušan Jurkovic (

However, he created a very distinctive style, strongly influenced by folk architecture. The villa, which the architect occupied and designed himself, is a prime example of his style.
"This crucial piece of Art Nouveau architecture is as significant as Brno’s functionalist villas. Located on a steep slope in a forest above the Svratka River in the municipality of Žabovresky, it represents a monumental leap in the architect’s work, in which he departs from imitating vernacular wooden houses. The central part of the house is the main element: a hall with a staircase which connects the social area on the ground floor with private rooms on the first floor. When designing his own house, Jurkovic was inspired by the then-modern villas of Joseph Maria Olbrich in Darmstadt and Josef Hoffmann in Vienna.
In addition to the permanent exhibition Dušan Jurkovic. The Architect and His House, there are other design and architecture exhibitions to explore.
