This is one of many stones used to mark the "corner" points on the boundary lines between towns in Massachusetts, in this case, the Town of Essex and the Town of Ipswich. The letters "E" (for Essex) and "I" (for Ipswich) are inscribed on opposite sides. It is approximately eight inches square and three feet high.
The marker is located on the south side of Chebacco Road (Ipswich)/Choate Street (Essex), near the driveway entrance to a large farm, and about 1/3 mile east of Candlewood Road, and just past where the road curves to the northeast.
Note that this is a
Witness Monument (WM). The actual town line corner is an unmarked point at the center of Chebacco Road, and about twenty eight feet bearing 18° 59' true from the stone marker.
The next adjacent marker heading south is
Essex-Hamilton-Ipswich, 0.4 miles.
The next adjacent marker heading northwest is
Essex-Ipswich 2 WM, 0.1 mile.
