This is one of many stones used to mark the "corner" points on the boundary lines between towns in Massachusetts, in this case, the Town of Essex and the Town of Ipswich. The letters "E" (for Essex) and "I" (for Ipswich) are inscribed on two sides. It is approximately six inches square and fifteen inches high, and is leaning about thirty degrees to the north.

The marker is located on the north side of Chebacco Road, about 1/4 mile east of Candlewood Road, and on the east side of the Castle Neck River where it goes under the road. It is down over the road bank, and not easily seen through the foliage.

Note that this is a Witness Monument (WM). The actual town line corner is an unmarked point at the intersection of the center of Chebacco Road and the center of Castle Neck River, and about thirteen feet southwest of the stone marker.

The next adjacent marker heading southeast is Essex-Ipswich 3 WM, 0.1 mile.
Heading north, the town line follows the center of the Castle Neck River downstream into Essex Bay.
