This heliport is part of the California Department of Forestry (CDF) Alma Fire Station. The elevation, around 760 feet, of the CDF Alma Fire Station makes this a mountain fire station. A helicopter is used to fight fires in mountainous areas that have no roads or are otherwise hard to reach.

The fire station is located near the perimeter of Lexington Reservoir. In times of a forest fire in the mountains, the helicopter can be seen scooping water from Lexington Reservoir to drop on the fires.
