The historic Union Station lies in the heart of downtown Tacoma and is surrounded by a plethora of great art and architecture. It is a waymarking wonderland with over 30 waymarks within a tenth of a mile from the station and over 50 within a half mile. Here's a sampling of what you can see when you visit the area. Be sure to open the gallery to take a look at all of the locations.
-Art/Music: WMKP4, Monarch Window in "Abstract Public Sculptures"; This glass installation hangs from one of the huge windows of Union Station. The artist, Tacoma's own Dale Chihuly, has 5 pieces located in the passenger depot, including one of his famed chandeliers.
-Buildings: WMKNV, Museum of Glass in "Art Museums"; The Museum of Glass is a fine arts museum dedicated to presenting glass in the context of contemporary art.
-Business/Commerce: WM1C3B, Harmon Brewery in "Brewpubs"; The Harmon Brewery opened in 1997 in the Historic F.S. Harmon Furniture Manufacturing Co. warehouse, next door to the University of Washington Tacoma campus. It has five flagship beers, spanning the full spectrum of ales.
-Entertainment: WM14WD, Bridge of Glass in "Official Local Tourist Attractions"; The Bridge of Glass has three separate Dale Chihuly glass sculptures along a pedestrian bridge that spans I-705 between Pacific Avenue of downtown Tacoma and the Museum of Glass Plazas.
-History/Culture: WMV8V, Union Depot-Warehouse Historic District in "U.S. National Register of Historic Places"; Union Station, built in 1911, was the Western terminus of the Northern Pacific Railroad and because of that the area was surrounded by warehouses. Many of these beautiful old warehouses have been saved and converted to other uses, such as classrooms for the University of Washington Tacoma.
-Signs: WMKNQ, Heidelberg Beer Ghost Sign in "Ghost Signs"; The stretch of Pacific Avenue between about 11th St. and 21st St. has an abundance of old ghost signs. This one advertises a beer that was brewed in Tacoma's old Columbia Brewing Co.
-Structures: WMKNX, Union Station in "Train Stations/Depots"; As I mentioned earlier, Tacoma was the western terminus of the Union Pacific Railroad. This grand old passenger terminal was renovated in the 1990s and turned into a Federal Courthouse.
-Technology: WM1874, University of Washington Tacoma Starbucks, in "Wi-Fi Hotspots"; This Starbucks location is located adjacent to the University Bookstore in a historic warehouse building. The café is loaded with cushie velvet armchairs for students to kick back in while they surf the web using the store's Wi-Fi connection. Tacoma was voted America's most wired city and throughout most of downtown you can get free wireless connections. Starbucks' connection is a pay connection, however.
