"Le cuivre a électrifié le monde à la fin des années 1800 et au début des années 1900. Avec ses nombreuses applications industrielles et sa capacité à conduire efficacement l'électricité, le cuivre a apporté des richesses, comparables aux ruées vers l'or du Cariboo et du Klondike, au district de Boundary, dans le sud de la Colombie-Britannique. L'extraction du cuivre nécessitait d'importantes installations de transport pour permettre la production d'un produit rentable. Et le Chemin de fer Canadien Pacifique est venu à la frontière avec cela à l'esprit.
Du cuivre a été trouvé tout autour de Boundary Creek - à Deadwood et Motherlode à l'ouest et à Phoenix à l'est. Des fonderies de cuivre ont été construites à Greenwood/Anaconda et à Boundary Falls. Le Columbia & Western Railway (appartenant au CPR) a poussé ses rails de Grand Forks à Greenwood et Midway en 1899 - avec un service de passagers à partir du 20 novembre.
Cet endroit où vous vous trouvez était le site du pont à chevalets et en treillis C&W de 1899 illustré ci-dessus. En 1913, le pont de bois est remplacé par un remblai de pierre et de gravier. Cela a nécessité la construction d'un tunnel routier revêtu de béton à une voie et d'un ponceau aux murs de pierre pour transporter le ruisseau Boundary sous la nouvelle voie ferrée.

En 1964, le tunnel routier à une voie est remplacé par un tunnel à deux voies. L'ancien tunnel a été comblé avec de la terre.
La photo de gauche montre le site en 1967 avec une locomotive diesel en direction est traversant l'autoroute.
En 1990, le CPR a abandonné le chemin de fer dans tout le district de Boundary et a commencé le processus de suppression des infrastructures. Le remblai au-dessus de l'autoroute a été enlevé, et comme il n'y avait plus besoin d'un tunnel sur l'autoroute, le tunnel à deux voies a été détruit.
Mais le tunnel à une voie de 1913 a été déterré et donné par le CFCP à la ville de Greenwood en tant que point de repère patrimonial. En 2000, dans le cadre d'un projet du millénaire pour la ville, plus de 210 drapeaux du monde entier ont été peints à l'extérieur du tunnel - de manière à accueillir les visiteurs dans cette partie de la frontière. ce "Tunnel des Drapeaux" est un symbole de la connexion entre le monde d'aujourd'hui et le monde très différent d'hier."
