Designed by IM Pei in 1981 the tallest building in Texas at 1,002-ft. is one of his plainer creations. The ceiling-to-floor windows in the 60th-floor sky lobby come equipped with plaques identifying the various buildings below.

IM Pei, the architect, has done better than this 1982 creation, but the building does have impressive views. Get on the elevators, press ‘SL', and be whisked up 60 stories to the sky lobby with its ceiling-to-floor windows. In the ground floor lobby, signs describe the building of the tower. The building was originally designed to be even taller - 80 stories high - but the FAA ordered the building scaled back five floors as it was in Hobby Airport’s flight path. Pei set aside almost a third of the block for the tower’s paved plaza, trying to create an inviting public space of fountains and art that doesn’t quite work in Houston without shade trees.

Although Texas Commerce Bank ceased to exist after being bought by Chemical Bank of New York in 1986, the name wasn’t retired until Chemical Bank acquired both the Chase Manhattan Corporation and JP Morgan, creating JPMorgan Chase in 2000.
