"4. Thompson House "The Manse" (501 North Main Street): ca. 1860, Carpenter Gothic,
1½ story, frame, weatherboarded, center gable, designed by Fletcher Sloan.
"Underwritten by the Presbyterian Church congregation at the time, the Manse is believed to be the first residence in Bolivar designed by Fletcher Sloan, a famous Philadelphia architect whose work is still the hallmark of Bolivar's historic homes districts.
"The house is a Victorian cottage with surprising features. In the tradition of Fletcher Sloan's work in the dental trim is characteristic. The surprise comes when the eyes are lifted to the pitched roof of the house where twin chimney pots tower from the fireplaces inside. This feature is borrowed from English designers. A bit of Colonial is in the make-up of this quaint cottage. It is a story and a half building facing north Main Street. The house was used for many years as a Manse for the Presbyterian ministers.
