This monument is dedicated to Battery C, 1st Ohio Light Artillery in recognition of their service during the Battle of Chickamauga, fought September 19–20, 1863. The battery was organized Camp Dennison near Cincinnati, Ohio and mustered in for a three year enlistment on September 9, 1861. The regiment was organized as early as 1860 under Ohio's militia laws, under Colonel James Barnett. It marks their location at on Sept. 20, 1863.

Text on the rear of the monument:

Sept. 19th, 1863, this battery, Lieut. Marco B. Gary commanding, accompanied the brigade into action, but the nature of the ground gave but little opportunity to employee its pieces.

Sept. 20th, occupied this position till about noon, when the break occurred in our line’s, the enemy turned our right; battery faced to the right, guns double-shotted with canister, and fired, with great effect, on advancing lines of enemy. About 1:00 P.M. for want of support was forced to retire.

Loss, killed 4: wounded 9: total 13. Horses killed 26.

Short Physical Description

7' x 5'6" x 6', the smooth-faced monument has a battered base and a rectangular shaft containing a bronze tablet depicting an artillery unit in action. Rounded capstone supports a granite artillery tube. North of Poe House site.

Monument is located within the Chickamauga Battlefield along Poe Road, map site #138.
