Connected to the Port Isabel Historic Museum by a covered boardwalk is the Treasures of the Gulf Coast Museum. Displayed here are archeological finds from three Spanish ships that sank off the coast of Padre Island in the 16th century. The exhibits focus on the difficulty and danger of sea travel in the 16th century, even detailing the ‘toilets’ used by sailors at the time. The story of the survivors of the shipwreck, their torturous journey through unknown lands which only one survived, is interesting. Don’t miss the models of Spanish galleons and the explanation of the markings on Spanish gold pieces.
