Branden d. 4. juni 1955 er nok det mest dramatiske kapitel i kirkens historie. På mirakuløs vis blev både mennesker og historisk inventar reddet under katastrofen. Tilbage stod kun de nøgne mure, alt det indre af kirken var brændt væk.
Katastrofen kunne nemt have fået et endnu uhyggeligere omfang. Da kirkens vældige tagkonstruktion styrtede sammen, befandt adskillige brand-folk sig i overhængende livsfare, men ingen menneskeliv gik tabt.
Sct Michaelis Kirke blev genopbygget og stod færdig i 1957.



The fire on June 4, 1955 is probably the most dramatic chapter in church history. Miraculously, both human and historical inventory were saved during the disaster. Only the bare walls stood, all the interior of the church burned away.
The catastrophe could easily have gotten even worse. When the huge roof structure of the church collapsed, several fire people found themselves in imminent danger to life, but no human lives were lost.
St. Michael's Church was rebuilt and completed in 1957.
