Located at the "end" of the Seawall, hidden behind some really nice condos. There is no beach here, this is all just broken granite (Rip-Rap). But judging by the number of people fishing here, you might want to cast a line.

Seawall Work In April Seen

Isle, TC Projects Are Going Well, Robinson Says

County Judge Theodore R. Robinson told the County Commissioner's Court Monday he had been informed by reliable sources all is going well and Washington in regards to Federal appropriation for the Galveston Seawall Project and that further westward extension should be started by April 1, 1958.

He further said he believed the Texas City Seawall and breakwater project will be authorized by Congress at its coming session.

At the final meeting of the year, the County Commissioners devoted much time to the seawall extension and Texas City Seawall and breakwater projects.

Adopt Resolution

The Court adopted a resolution on the Seawall extension project for the procuring of right away and establishing authority to proceed with condemnation suits against those property owners who turned down the county's offer for the purchase of right away through their property.

A group of owners, together with their attorneys, met with the court two weeks ago and the officially debunk to the county's offer for right of way as counter proposals for the price asked by the owners. The attorney said they saw no other resource recourse other than the county to enter condemnation suits against their client.

Judge Robinson read to the court a copy of the letter he had sent to Brig. Gen. J. L. Person, Assistant Chief of engineers for Civilian Works at Washington D.C. it was jointly prepared by Robinson and Alvin Kelso, Chairman of the Extension Committee for the Chamber of Commerce.

Begun After Storm

The judge pointed out that the seawall building project was begun following the 1900 storm which claimed the lives of 6,000 persons practically destroyed the city and caused $25,000 in property damage, which at today's market value would exceed $100,000.

Seven years ago he continued, Congress authorized the extension of the existing Seawall 16,300,000 feet along the shore and an estimated cost of $8,420,000 with $5,500,000 (cost at 1957 level is $8,070,000) to be borne by the US government and $2,870,000 by this County on the condition it would furnish assistance is satisfactory to the Secretary of War and that it would furnish easement and right-of-way is necessary for construction of the project and other usuals assurances.

In the Presidents 1958 budget, eight $785,000 is initially allotted for the Galveston West End seawall project and an additional $1.000,000 is anticipated in the budget for 1959, Judge Robinson said.

Continuing Contract

He explained it is the intention of the county to enter into a continuing contract for about a million and a half dollars and estimated that 2,000 feet of Seawall can be constructed for that amount. The county, he added, will have expended by January a sum of approximately 3 million dollars which conforms with all the counties assurances and obligations to date.

"The people of the county," the judge wrote, quote feel it is a debt of Honor mowing the country for Congress to appropriate sufficient money to at least continue the extension westward.”

Judge Robertson said he “felt reasonably sure Congress will act favorably on the measures "but I just want those men who are working on the budget to have all the necessary information before them when considering our request."
