This was the first office building in Houston to be air conditioned (1932), a development that was key to Houston’s future growth. The building has been converted from offices into a Courtyard Hotel. A few scattered photographs in the hotel’s lobby tell the story of Humble Oil. A Residence Inn is located in the building’s taller annex.
Before Ross S. Sterling became Governor of Texas, he had founded Humble Oil, selling a 50% interest in the company to Standard Oil of New Jersey (Esso). Over time, Esso acquired a majority stake in Humble Oil. In the late 1960's, Esso folded several of its subsidiaries into itself, of which Humble Oil was but one, creating the behemoth Exxon.
