John S. Love was a prominent Jacksonville businessman, the owner of a
tin shop. Love and his mother Margaret left Missouri for Oregon in 1853, but became part of "the lost wagon train," a group of settlers who followed a guide's suggestion to take a "shortcut" from Nyssa, Oregon, across a region that actually did not contain a trail. Forced to abandon their wagon and take only the supplies they could carry, Margaret and John ultimately did make it to western Oregon but due to the hardships, Margaret became an invalid and ended up living the last six years of her life with her son. Margaret became the first person buried at Jacksonville Cemetery, in 1859, and her son John died of smallpox in 1867 at the age of 36.
