Early settler M.G. Kennedy, thought to be Jackson County's first elected sheriff, was the first to recorded a claim to this land. He ran a tin shop for a brief period of time before selling the land and shop to
John S. Love and John Bilger. For a number of years, the building featured a sign in the central panel of the parapet reading "Love & Bilger." When Love died in the mid 1860s, Bilger continued the business until his death in 1877, and then Bilger's wife Amanda continued the operation under the name Pioneer Hardware for several years.
For several decades this was the location of the Jacksonville Bakery. Today, it houses a gift shop and whole foods eatery.
