DESCRIPTION:
Bridge Number: 35-04-18. The Mechanicsville Road Bridge is a 156 feet long covered bridge that spans Grand River for Mechanicsville Road in Austinburg Township, Ashtabula County, Ohio. The bridge has been by-passed, but you can still drive through it. This is one of Ashtabula County's 17 covered bridges, two of which are in the immediate vicinity of Harpersfield and Austinburg. The bridge is located about .9 of a mile south of Ohio 307. It has Howe Truss with a layered wood arch. The bridge is 1 lane with a vertical clearance of only 8 feet. The bridge has the original stone abutments, but reinforced with two concrete piers during the recent renovation. The bridge is painted white on the exterior and has a red corrugated steel roof. The interior is not painted. Built in 1867, the bridge fell into disrepair. Renovated in 2003 - 2004, the overall condition of the bridge is excellent with little graffiti. The arch is not a solid timber but rather 15 layers of 2 X 8 boards. We could not find a data plate on the bridge.
For several photos of the bridge before and after the renovation see Dale Travis's excellent webpage in the LINKS below. For an explanation of trusses see the Burr Society webpage below.
