in Virginia Historical Markers This marker describes the Battle of Middleburg, which was a part of the Gettysburg Campaign. Maj. General Jeb Stuart established his headquarters in Middleburg. On June 17th, Col. Dufie and the Rhode Island Calvary began marching west from Centreville.
Confederate commanders could not believe that such a small group would go so far behind enemy lines without support, so they were not aggressive.
