Der Bahnsteig vom Bahnhof Köln-West ist eine beliebte Location bei Trainspottern, also Personen, die in ihrer Freizeit ausgefallene Züge und Lokomotiven beobachten und fotografieren. Im Sommer sind hier regelmäßig Gruppen von Trainspottern zu beobachten, die ihrem Hobby nachgehen.

Dies liegt zum einen an dem hohen Zugaufkommen hier: Die Bahnstrecke zwischen Köln und Bonn ist eine der meistbefahrendsten Abschnitte in ganz Deutschland - sowohl von Personen- als auch von Güterzügen.

Zum anderen ist hier die Bahntrasse sage und schreibe 10-gleisig: Zwei Gleise für den Personenverkehr mit Bahnsteig am Bahnhof und die restlichen für den Güterverkehr und als Abstellgleise. Aktuell nicht benötigte Personenzüge werden hier ebenso abgestellt wie Güterzüge, die auf ihre Einfahrt in den Containerbahnhof Köln-Eifeltor oder in den Betriebshof am Gladbacher Wall warten. Das gibt den Trainspottern reichlich Gelegenheiten, die Züge in Ruhe abzulichten.
The platform from the Köln-West station is a popular location for trainspotters, i.e. people who observe and photograph unusual trains and locomotives during their free time. In summer, there are regular groups of trainspotters to pursue their hobby.

This is partly due to the high train traffic here: The railway line between Cologne and Bonn is one of the busiest sections in the whole of Germany - for both passenger and freight trains.

On the other hand, here is the railway line as much as 10-track: Two tracks for passenger transport with platforms at the station and the remaining for freight traffic and as sidings. Passenger trains that are currently not used are parked here as well as freight trains that wait for their entry into the container terminal Cologne-Eifeltor or in the depot on Gladbacher Wall. This gives the trainspotters plenty of opportunities to take their pictures of the trains.
