The dam is located 1565 metres above sea level. The dam wall was built in 1933 from mortar masonry. Later it was extended and today it is 27 m high and has a capacity of 697000 m³. The water is channelled through irrigation ditches and tunnels to the municipalities of Arucas and San Mateo.
The reservoir is located on a strange volcanic rock called "Roque Nublo Breccie". The vegetation of the area consists of a young pine grove, as well as various species of broom and sage, which are very common in high mountain areas.
