" Ce monument est situé sur la plus grande place de Bruxelles (Poelaert), juste face au Palais de Justice de Bruxelles et au Monument de la Reconnaissance britannique à la Nation belge.
Le monument à la Gloire de l’Infanterie belge est réalisé à l’initiative d’un comité composé d’anciens combattants de la Première Guerre mondiale, présidé par le lieutenant-général Biebuyck (1860-1944), qui souhaite ainsi rendre hommage et exprimer sa reconnaissance aux 32.000 soldats de l’infanterie tombés durant la Grande Guerre.
L'infanterie paie le prix fort au conflit, à hauteur de près de 70% du nombre des morts cumulés durant la période de 1914 à 1918.
En vue de l’exécution de la commande du monument, en 1932, le comité décide d’organiser un concours. Le procédé n'a rien d'étonnant. Appel à candidature est lancé.
Au terme de l’épreuve, l’architecte Antoine De Mol et le sculpteur Edward Vereycken, tous deux blessés de guerre, sont lauréats. Le monument est inauguré le 5 mai 1935, en présence du roi Léopold III.
L'édifice, d'une hauteur approximative de 15 mètres, se présente sous la forme d’un haut obélisque sculpté dans de la pierre bleue (petit granit). L'aspect élancé "de la lame de la dague", qui se dresse vers le ciel et dont la "poignée" serait plantée dans le sol, la garde demeurant fixée au ras du sol, confère un sentiment aérien qui accentue l'effet voulu de glorifier la scène.
À la base de l’obélisque, un groupe de militaires à pied, officiers et soldats accompagnés de chiens de trait, d'artilleurs et de cavaliers, marche avec détermination sous les ailes protectrices de la Victoire.
Ces soldats portent les uniformes et armements qui équipaient les troupes de l'infanterie belge, après la mi-1915 (casque Adrian reconnaissable à sa gueule de lion).
Au pied du monument, quatre soldats, deux par deux (grenadier, soldat de ligne (lignard), carabinier et chasseur à pied), en tenue de 1914, montent la garde autour de la sépulture d’un fantassin (gisant en bronze).
Au sommet de l’obélisque, disposées en croix, quatre sentinelles veillent, debout, par dessous la couronne royale (bronze doré).
La composition générale du monument s’organise de manière symétrique, renforçant le caractère martial à l'ensemble. L'expressivité des personnages rehausse l'aspect hautement théâtralisé de l'oeuvre. "

Aan de voet van de obelisk, een groep soldaten te voet, begeleid door agenten en soldaten betrekking honden, artillerie cavalerieoefeningen, lopen vastberaden onder de beschermende vleugels van Victory.
Deze soldaten dragen uniformen en wapens die de troepen van de Belgische infanterie uitgerust, na medio 1915 (Adrian helm herkenbaar aan de mond van de leeuw).
Aan de voet van het monument, vier soldaten, twee aan twee (granaatappel-lijn soldaat (lineman), schutter en jager lopen), gehouden in 1914, houden de wacht rond het graf van een soldaat (liggend brons).
Bovenaan de obelisk, kruislings zorgen vier wachters zich onder de koningskroon (verguld brons).
De algemene samenstelling van het monument is symmetrisch georganiseerd, waardoor het krijgskarakter van het geheel wordt versterkt. De expressiviteit van de personages versterkt het hoogst theatrale aspect van het werk. "
