[ENG] The Hamburg subway is the elevated and underground railway system of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg as well as several neighbouring communities in Schleswig-Holstein. The system was put into operation in 1912 and is the second oldest underground railway in Germany. The Ring (Schlump - St. Pauli - Rathaus - Hauptbahnhof Süd - Berliner Tor - Barmbek - Kellinghusenstraße - Schlump) was first put into operation. It leads to a large part over iron viaducts and over bricked arch constructions. At the Mundsburg such an arch construction leads along the Ulmenau. Various sandstone reliefs are embedded in the supporting structure to decorate it. The relief shown here is adorned by two birds that turn their bodies away from each other, but turn their heads towards each other and look at a grape together.
