"Margaretha van Oostenrijk was hertogin van Savoye, landvoogdes van de Habsburgse Nederlanden en de enige dochter van Maximiliaan I van Oostenrijk en Maria van Bourgondië. Ze was de zuster van Filips de Schone, die huwde met Johanna van Castilië, ook de Waanzinnige genoemd.
Ze werd geboren te Brussel in 1480. Haar ouders waren niet van de minsten: keizer Maximiliaan I van Oostenrijk en Maria van Bourgondië. Die laatste stierf al in 1482. Het was helaas niet de enige keer dat Margareta van Oostenrijk met de dood geconfronteerd werd. Heel haar leven werd bepaald door deze sombere metgezel.
Grote tegenslagen en grote verwezenlijkingen
Zo stierf haar eerste man Juan van Aragon-Castilië, troonopvolger van Spanje, al enkele maanden na het huwelijk in 1497 aan tuberculose. Op de koop toe beviel Margareta van een doodgeboren dochter. Enkele jaren later (1501) hertrouwde ze met Philibert II, hertog van Savoye. Drie jaar nadien overleed haar geliefde echtgenoot door het overvloedig drinken van ijskoud water na een jachtpartij op een hete dag. Margareta bleef weduwe tijdens de rest van haar leven. Ze verwerkte haar rouwgevoelens in Franstalige poëzie.
Hieruit blijkt haar grote passie voor boeken. Margareta had ook belangstelling voor muziek, architectuur, ... Haar hof te Mechelen was een belangrijk verspreidpunt van de renaissance en het humanisme.
Margareta Van Oostenrijk speelde een grote politieke rol. Zo was ze landvoogdes van de Nederlanden in naam van haar neef keizer Karel. Haar aandeel was ook groot bij de totstandkoming van de Damesvrede van Kamerrijk in 1529.
In 1530 stierf deze belangrijke dame. Ze werd opgevolgd door Maria van Hongarije. Het hof verhuisde naar Brussel. Dit was het einde van Mechelen als bestuurlijke hoofdstad van de Nederlanden."

Mais Charles VIII épousera finalement Anne de Bretagne et Marguerite délaissée, lui en tiendra rigueur toute sa vie. Elle se réfugie alors aux Pays-Bas où son père négocie son union avec Jean de Castille. La lune de miel est de courte durée car Jean décède prématurément. Son deuxième mariage avec Philibert II lui permet de s'occuper du duché de Savoie, mais sera interrompu après 3 ans par la mort du duc.
Rappelée au Pays-Bas, elle assure la régence pour le compte de son neveu Charles et règne sur les provinces du Nord de l'Europe. Charles devenu empereur s'oppose à François Ier. Les deux souverains seront respectivement représentés lors de la signature de la Paix des dames le 3 août 1529 à Cambrai par Marguerite, tante de Charles Quint, et Louise de Savoie , mère de François Ier."
