This cute mural is located on the backside of the dog park wall within Coast Guard Park. Area Boy Scouts had put up fences and laid paths to make the dog park, but a concrete structure from when the Coast Guard used the area for target practice was spoiling the aesthetics, Ferrysburg City Council member Regina Sjoberg said.

“The back side of the dog park was really ugly -- just this big bunker,” she said.

Sjoberg said she suggested to the city that they get some children involved to paint a whimsical mural.

First, volunteers from the Grand Haven Coast Guard station cleared away the brush around the bunker and painted on sky and grass for the mural. Then children from Walden Green Montessori school and West Michigan Academy of Arts and Academics came and painted brightly colored dogs to complete the picture.

“It was a great thing to see the community come together like that,” Sjoberg said. “It’s very playful and just what I was hoping for with getting the kids involved.”
