Located thirty miles south of the town of Ajo is Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument. The monument extends to the border with Mexico. The monument was created to protect a rare stand of Organ Pipe Cactus that, while common in Mexico, are only found in one area in the United States. The visitor center is just off State Hwy. 85. It provides visitor amenities, an education center, gift shop and park offices. The visitor center portion is dedicated to Kris Eggle, a ranger shot in the line of duty in 2002.
