La statue de bronze de la reine Victoria, qui se trouve dans l’escalier menant au Pavillon de musique Strathcona, sur la rue Sherbrooke, est une reproduction de l’œuvre en marbre blanc qui se trouve devant le palais de Kensington, au Royaume-Uni. La pièce originale, conçue en 1887, sera dévoilée en 1893. Commandé par Lord Strathcona, fondateur du Collège Royal Victoria, le bronze qui se trouve à McGill a été dévoilé en 1900. Lord Strathcona était un ami de la reine Victoria et de sa fille, la princesse Louise, auteure de la sculpture. Lié d’amitié avec la Reine et sa sœur, ce dernier inaugurera le bronze en son honneur à l’Université McGill, en 1900. Le gouverneur général du Canada, Lord Minto, et son épouse étaient présents à la cérémonie de dévoilement de l’œuvre, événement politique et social de grande envergure.

The bronze statue of Queen Victoria, located on the stairs leading to the Strathcona Music Building on Sherbrooke Street, is a cast of a white marble version that stands in front of Kensington Palace in the United Kingdom. The marble version in the UK was first conceived in 1887 and unveiled in 1893. McGill’s bronze cast was unveiled in 1900. The statue was commissioned by Lord Strathcona, founder of Royal Victoria College. Strathcona was a friend of both Queen Victoria and her daughter, Princess Louise, the creator of the sculpture. When the sculpture was unveiled Lord Minto, the Governor General of Canada, and his wife Lady Minto were present at the ceremony, which was a large social and political occasion.
