The Organ Pipe Cactus presents multiple arms reaching to 30' Common through Mexico it is found only in a small area of the southwestern United states. Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument encompasses the Biosphere Reserve and provides protection for this unusual species. This area, bordering Mexico, was originally used for a livestock range and it contains a number of mines. The monument was established in 1937 but cattle were not removed from the area until 1975. While the effects of cattle raising linger the area is becoming reestablished as native plants thrive. Creosote, always an early pioneer plant, is common as are Saguaro, Ocotillo, Chollo and a number of understory plants. The Organ Pipe Cacti, being less susceptible to foraging, thrive in their original areas.
