Cardinal Stadium was formerly known as Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium and is home to the University of Louisville Cardinals. Construction began in 1996 and the stadium opened on September 5, 1998 when the Cardinals hosted their in state rival the Kentucky Wildcats. Louisville lost that game by a score of 68-34. The stadium has been expanded several times over the years and has a current seating capacity of about 61,000. The stadium features 800 club seats, 68 lodge level seats and 12 field level suites. At the north end of the stadium is the Howard Schnellenberger football complex was is named for the University very popular and successful former football coach. The Schnellenberger Complex features the football offices and a state of the are conditioning center. Also, at the north end of the stadium is a bronze statue of Johnny Unitas, who is the University’s most famous alumnus. The south end of the stadium features a large state of the art high definition scoreboard. The stadium is visible from Interstate 65 and is about a mile from Churchill Down and on Kentucky Derby Weekend the Stadiums parking lots are used for Derby Parking.
