The wishing well is located on Rydal Road at the entrance to the Market Cross, a pedestrianised shopping area, in the centre of Ambleside.

The shopping area was constructed in 1997 on the site of the old bus station, and is one of the newer developments in the town. The Rotary Club wishing well is located at the front of the complex.
Visitors are encouraged to put change in and make a wish, on behalf of the Rotary Club of Ambleside Kirkstone.

The wishing well is constructed of stone with a stainless steel interior for the coins to slide down into a collection area inside the well.
The plaque which is blue with a gold edging is situated on the back of the well. It is inscribed in gold lettering as follows;
