"Bienvenue en Auvergne. Quand on arrive ici, on commence souvent par les volcans… Ou plutôt l’aire des Volcans d’Auvergne. Un endroit pas vraiment volcanique, mais néanmoins très étonnant !
De mon point de vue, autant commencer par le début. Et quand on parle de paysages auvergnats, autant dire de volcans, l'aventure commence souvent… sur l'aire des volcans d'Auvergne où, de mémoire d'Auvergnat, on n'a jamais vu de volcans.
Ici, sur la commune de Champs, à 10 km de Gannat, on est en plein Bourbonnais. Mais quand on a construit l'autoroute, il y a un quart de siècle, et cette belle aire censée être la porte de l'Auvergne, avec, il est vrai, au loin, la silhouette des puys, on l'a baptisée aire des Volcans, parce que ça sonnait bien… Et qu'on les voyait quand même, à l'horizon.
Alors, pour les voir encore mieux, on a construit tout autour, à coup de bulldozers et de pelleteuses, quelques volcans d'opérette sur lesquels on grimpe aujourd'hui pour regarder l'Auvergne.
Et force est de constater que le stratagème a plutôt bien fonctionné, même si le résultat est plutôt décevant, surtout sous le soleil de midi où des hordes de touristes phosphorescents escaladent ces talus pour ne découvrir qu'un horizon flou, plombé sous la chaleur. Dommage, car sous la lumière rasante du matin, ou du soir, le spectacle reste fort convenable, surtout au sud où toute la Chaîne des Puys se déroule en grand-angle.
L'Auvergne, vue par les touristes
Pour s'y retrouver, neuf panneaux, pas bien jolis, ont été installés, permettant en revanche de ne pas confondre Combronde et Gannat, le grand Sarcouy et le puy de Côme, les monts de la Madeleine et ceux du Forez… Ainsi que la gentiane et la vipère péliade, deux panneaux supplémentaires étant consacrés à la faune et à la flore locales.
Intéressant, mais pas inoubliable, surtout pour un Auvergnat. Aussi, on ne vous conseillera pas de faire l'aller retour exprès, mais en revanche, si vous passez devant, il serait dommage de ne pas s'y arrêter… Ne serait-ce que pour écouter les touristes parler de notre belle Auvergne : ceux que j'ai croisés il y a quelques jours annonçaient ainsi avec précision… une prochaine éruption de nos volcans d'Auvergne dans 6.000 ans exactement ! Juste une petite erreur mineure puisqu'en fait la dernière éruption a bien eu lieu… il y a 6.000 ans. Et entre nous, plus ou moins 6.000 ans, qu'est ce que ça change ?"

From my point of view, both start from the beginning. And when we talk about Auvergne landscapes, so to speak about volcanoes, the adventure often begins ... in the area of ??the volcanoes of Auvergne where, in memory of Auvergnat, we never saw volcanoes.
Here, in the town of Champs, 10 km from Gannat, we are in full Bourbonnais. But when we built the highway, a quarter of a century ago, and this beautiful area supposed to be the gateway to the Auvergne, with, it is true, in the distance, the silhouette of puys, it was called Volcanoes, because it sounded good ... And that we saw them anyway, on the horizon.
So, to see them even better, we built all around, with bulldozers and excavators, some operetta volcanoes on which we climb today to watch the Auvergne.
And it is clear that the ploy has worked rather well, even if the result is rather disappointing, especially in the midday sun where hordes of phosphorescent tourists climb these embankments to discover a vague horizon, leaded in the heat. Too bad, because under the glowing light of the morning, or the evening, the show is very suitable, especially in the south where the entire Chaîne des Puys takes place in wide angle.
Auvergne, seen by tourists
To find your way around, nine panels, not very pretty, were installed, allowing however not to confuse Combronde and Gannat, the great Sarcouy and puy de Como, the mountains of the Madeleine and those of Forez ... As well as the Gentian and the Viper Péliade, two additional panels are dedicated to the local flora and fauna.
Interesting, but not unforgettable, especially for an Auvergnat. Also, we will not advise you to make the return trip on purpose, but on the other hand, if you pass by, it would be a shame not to stop there ... If only to listen to the tourists talk about our beautiful Auvergne: those whom I met a few days ago announced so precisely ... a next eruption of our volcanoes of Auvergne in 6,000 years exactly! Just a small minor error since in fact the last eruption took place ... 6,000 years ago. And between us, more or less 6,000 years, what does it change?"
