Hennepin Park was named for Father Louis Hennepin. He was a Belgian priest who visited the Lewiston area in early December 1678 in the service of Rene Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle, on an expedition to locate a suitable site to build La Salle's ship "Le Griffon." This advance party, under the command of Sieur de La Motte, included Father Hennepin and a group of ship carpenters, blacksmiths, and other artisans. They erected a crude palisaded store house, the first permanent dwelling in the area at the top of a ravine about a half mile south of the park. Though not the first European to visit the area, Father Hennepin was probably one of the most interesting and best known.
