The pine tree sculpture in St Martin’s Square was created by artist Wolfgang Buttress.
The sculpture represents a pine tree with a tapering trunk constructed from glass blasted stainless steel starting with a base 45cm in width. The spiral is composed of a series of projecting, individually riveted T shaped sections of varying widths, depending on their length from the core. The tree is 44ft tall and made out of the reclaimed copper roof from the old Spiral Café, which was removed to make room for a new row of restaurants, including Jamie’s Italian and Wagamama.
The sculpture was inspired by the clearing of trees from St Martin's in the Bull Ring and the philosophical question “if a tree falls in a forest and no-one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?” (
