This is a work of fiction, purporting to be a reprint of a tale written in the 18th century about a haunting. It was published by the proprietors of Salford Hall at that time in around 1968 -
in 1962 two local builders set up an enterprise with the intention of restoring the hall. They received various grants and opened as a hotel. In 1971 they went bankrupt. This story was allegedly written with the sole intention of passing it off as a 19th century reprint in order to drum up business for the hotel.
The characters in the story would appear to be fictional. The building had once been a convent, and a full list of all the nuns is available, but none of the characters in the book existed - Dame Burgoyne, Mr Payton J.P. of Buckinghamshire, Evra Hendon (not buried at Harvington Church), nor was a Herbert Dingwall ever tried and transported.
A rather slender book at only 62 pages.
